So You Think You’re Smart, Do You? Good. What Are You Doing With It?So you think you’re smart, do you? Good. What are you doing with it? I don’t mean what degrees you have. I don’t mean what your IQ score is. I don’t mean whether you can win arguments on the internet, quote the right books, use bigger words than the people around you, or make everybody else in the room feel stupid. I mean: What are you curious about? What do you notice? What makes you stop and wonder why that works that way, how that happens, whether we could do it better, what would happen if something changed? Those kinds of questions have followed me around for most of my life. And depending on who you ask, they can be annoying as hell. Some people think I think too much. Some people think I’m never satisfied. Some people hear me ask “How could we do this better?” and assume I’m criticizing what they already did. Some people probably just think I’m crazy. That’s okay. They get to live their lives. I get to live mine. And one of the things that brings me a ridiculous amount of joy is trying to understand how things work. Not just what happened. What is underneath it? What system is producing the result? Where is the friction? Where is the flow? What keeps reinforcing itself? Is there a flywheel creating something useful, or is there a runaway feedback loop amplifying noise until everybody starts treating distortion like reality? What is signal? What is noise? What small change would make the whole thing work a little better? I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember. And every once in a while, I stumble onto the story of somebody who makes me think: Oh, this guy would have driven everybody around him nuts too. Henry Cavendish is one of those guys. How the Hell Do You Weigh the Earth?Think about this for a second. You’re living in the 1700s. You know there is a planet underneath your feet. Obviously. You can see mountains. You can pick up rocks. You can dig into the ground. But how would you figure out how dense the entire Earth is? You cannot put the planet on a bathroom scale. You cannot lift it. You cannot scoop all of it into a measuring cup. You cannot even see most of it. And yet people were curious enough to ask the question. That alone fascinates me. The famous experiment eventually performed by Henry Cavendish used an incredibly sensitive torsion-balance apparatus to measure the tiny gravitational attraction between masses. The underlying apparatus had originally been conceived by John Michell, another remarkably curious natural philosopher who died before completing the experiment. The equipment eventually came into Cavendish’s hands. He refined the setup and carried out the measurements. His 1798 paper was titled Experiments to Determine the Density of the Earth. Just sit with that title for a minute. Imagine looking at the entire fucking planet and thinking: I wonder if I can figure out how dense that thing is. Here is what Cavendish actually did. He suspended a six-foot wooden rod from a single strand of wire. On each end of the rod, he attached a small lead sphere. Then he placed two massive 350-pound solid lead balls on a separate mechanism and brought them near the smaller spheres. The large lead masses gravitationally attracted the smaller ones. The attraction was extraordinarily weak. Even small air currents and temperature differences could disturb measurements that delicate. So Cavendish placed the apparatus in a closed room to protect the experiment from those disturbances. He observed it from outside through a telescope. The attraction caused the suspended rod to rotate by an extraordinarily small amount, twisting the supporting wire. By calculating the force involved in that tiny movement, Cavendish could determine the gravitational attraction between the spheres. He used that microscopic twist—a movement almost too small to see—to calculate the density of the Earth. Roughly 5.48 times the density of water. Let that land for a moment. Measure something almost unimaginably small. Learn something about something unimaginably large. That is what grabs me about this story. Not: Look how smart Cavendish was compared with you. That’s boring. And it is not particularly useful. What interests me is the mental move: There is something I want to understand. How could I find out? That question changes your relationship with the world. Smart Is a Terrible Thing to WorshipI think we make a mistake when we turn intelligence into an identity.
Those labels become cages. If I decide I’m smart, now I have to protect the reputation. I have to know the answer. I have to avoid looking foolish. I have to be right. And if I decide I’m not smart, I have an equally convenient excuse. Why bother? People like Cavendish do that kind of thing. People like me don’t. Both identities can kill curiosity. Because curiosity requires you to begin with: I don’t know. That’s not weakness. That’s the doorway. Almost every interesting thing I’ve learned started with some version of: What the hell is going on here? I didn’t understand it. Something didn’t make sense. Something bothered me. Something seemed inefficient. Something contradicted what I had been told. Or I simply wondered what would happen if I tried something different. That itch is valuable. You don’t have to immediately scratch it with an answer. Sometimes you should scratch it with an experiment. This Has Probably Annoyed People My Entire LifeI can understand why my way of looking at things gets irritating. Imagine working with somebody who keeps asking:
There are times when the correct answer is: “Chuck, shut the fuck up and help us finish the job.” Fair enough. Curiosity without situational awareness can become another form of self-indulgence. You can analyze something long after analysis stopped being useful. You can optimize things that don’t matter. You can irritate people who are perfectly happy with “good enough.” You can also convince yourself that thinking about the work is the same as doing the work. It isn’t. That’s an important warning for somebody wired like me. But the opposite mistake is just as real. “That’s the way we’ve always done it.” That sentence has probably protected more stupid systems than almost anything else humans say. I saw it in construction. I see it in martial arts. I see it in businesses. I see it in my own habits. A process exists. Everyone adapts around its flaws. The flaws become normal. Then somebody asks: Why? And everybody looks at him like he just farted in church. Sometimes the annoying question is exactly the useful one. You Probably Have Your Own Way of SeeingHere is where I don’t want this article to turn into: Be like Chuck. God, no. One Chuck is plenty. You may not enjoy taking systems apart in your head. You may not care about feedback loops, process maps, or friction. Your curiosity may point somewhere completely different. Maybe you notice people. You can walk into a room and immediately sense tension everybody else misses. Maybe you hear music differently. Maybe you see shape and color. Maybe machines make intuitive sense to you. Maybe you remember stories. Maybe you understand animals. Maybe you notice numbers. Maybe you can make complicated ideas simple. Maybe you see patterns in language. Maybe you have an unusual feel for movement. Maybe you cook without recipes because somehow you understand what flavors need. Maybe your hands tell you things about wood, metal, fabric, engines, plants, soil, or bodies that somebody else would never notice. Maybe nothing feels particularly “natural” yet, but there are subjects you keep returning to because something about them refuses to leave you alone. Start there. Not because you need to discover your one magical predetermined gift. I don’t believe life is necessarily that tidy. Start there because attention is information.
That may be worth exploring. Your Gifts Are Tools, Not TrophiesThere is a line I keep coming back to: Your gifts are tools, not trophies. Being “smart” isn’t particularly impressive by itself. Neither is being:
Those are raw materials. What matters is what you build with them. Cavendish’s story isn’t interesting because he could have walked around eighteenth-century England saying: I’m really fucking intelligent. It’s interesting because somebody looked at a question that seemed almost impossible to answer and went to work on it. The pattern was something like:
That pattern is available to all of us at a smaller scale. You do not have to determine the density of the Earth. You could be trying to understand why you always lose energy at two in the afternoon. Why one training partner always manages to pass your guard. Why your kid opens up to you in the car but not across the dinner table. Why one room in your house is always too hot. Why your team keeps making the same mistake. Why one recipe works and another falls flat. Why your money disappears despite a decent income. Why you can maintain a habit for three weeks but not three months. Why certain people energize you and others leave you exhausted. Why your students understand one explanation but stare blankly at another. The world is full of experiments waiting to happen. Stop Demanding the Answer Before You ExploreThis may be one of the reasons curiosity disappears as people get older. Children ask ridiculous questions.
Why? Why? Why? Eventually adults get tired of it. Then school sometimes teaches us that questions have correct answers printed in the back of a book. You learn the answer. You pass the test. Next chapter. But the interesting questions in adult life rarely work that cleanly. There may not be an answer yet. Or the answer might depend on context. Or the first explanation might be wrong. Or you may have to get your hands dirty. You have to:
That is exploration. And I think we need more of it. Curiosity Can Also Be an Act of ServiceThere is another part of this that matters to me. I enjoy figuring things out because it brings me joy. That would be enough. Not everything has to become productive. Not every hobby needs to become a side hustle. Not every curiosity needs a business model. You are allowed to explore something simply because the world is fucking interesting. But sometimes that curiosity becomes useful to somebody else. I notice friction. I ask questions. I take things apart mentally. Sometimes I find a simpler way. Sometimes I don’t. But every once in a while, the thing I figure out makes somebody else’s life easier. Better. Less confusing. Less frustrating. Maybe even happier. I like that. I don’t need everybody around me to enjoy the process the way I do. Some people hear me analyzing a system and think: Jesus Christ, Chuck. Just leave it alone. Fine. They can leave it alone. I can poke it with a stick. And when that poking produces something useful, I’m happy to share it. That feels like a pretty good way to spend part of a life. So You Think You’re Smart, Do You?Good. Now forget about proving it. Find something that fascinates you. Something you don’t understand. Something that makes you ask: How does that work? Then follow the question. Use whatever tools you already have:
You don’t need a laboratory. You need a question worth following. And you don’t have to change the world. You only have to become a little more awake to it. Cavendish looked at the planet beneath his feet and helped answer a question that seemed absurdly large: How dense is the Earth? Your question can be smaller.
